Domain note
GASTON D'ORLEANS
In 1626, Gaston d'Orléans received the county of Blois (on which Chambord depends) as an apanage from his brother, King Louis XIII. A rebel at times, he was even placed under house arrest from 1634. He enjoyed his stay in Chambord and undertook the first restorations of the castle. The terraces, which were no longer watertight, were repaired, as were the lantern tower and the sculpted vaults on the second floor, which had suffered from water infiltration. He also acquired new land to create the Chambord park and completed the construction of the enclosure wall. Chambord reached its present size of 5,440 hectares, enclosed by a wall 32 kilometres long.
