Domain note

COUNT OF CHAMBORD

Henri, grandson of the future king Charles X, received Chambord as a birth gift through a national subscription in 1821. Forced into exile in 1830, he administered his estate with passion from his Austrian residences in the hope of residing there on his return to France and reigning under the name of "Henry V". The castle underwent numerous restoration campaigns that saved it from ruin.

It was also opened to visitors for the first time. The count presented a collection of works, especially family portraits, acquired on the art market or donated by loyal royalists.  With his death in 1883, the last direct heir of King Louis XIV passed away.
