Domain note
THE CHAMBORD ESTATE
With a surface area of 5,440 hectares, the Domaine national de Chambord is the largest walled park in Europe. It is home to exceptional flora and fauna. Construction of the Château de Chambord began in 1519.
At the same time, François I acquired the agricultural land adjoining the Boulogne forest to the north of the Cosson, to create the park. More than 2,500 hectares of farmland were annexed. This area consisted mainly of cultivated land, a few copses and, probably, moorland that fed the sheep of the surrounding farmers.
In 1645, Gaston d'Orléans increased the surface area of the estate and had the construction of the surrounding wall completed. The surface area of the National Estate of Chambord then reached its current size. The Chambord park is part of the Natura 2000 network, whose main objective is to preserve biodiversity.
