Domain note
Château de Chambord
Born in the heart of the Sologne wetlands, Château de Chambord is a stone dream commissioned by François I, who had just ascended to the throne. From the outset, the king wanted the palace to be a dazzling demonstration of his power, designed to impress foreign sovereigns and emissaries alike.
His bold plan was built around an emblematic central element: a double-revolution staircase, probably the result of Leonardo da Vinci's influence. This masterpiece of ingenuity allows two people to go up and down without ever passing each other, leading to the vast terraces adorned with multiple sculpted fireplaces and finely decorated capitals.
It wasn't until the reign of Louis XIV that the edifice was fully completed, and the 17th century saw the development of its surroundings. In 1930, the château and its vast estate became state property.
During the Second World War, Chambord played an unexpected role: it became a place of refuge for the greatest treasures of Paris museums, evacuated to escape destruction. Major works such as La Joconde, La Vénus de Milo, La Victoire de Samothrace, tapestries from the Château de Versailles and paintings by Raphaël were stored here in 5,446 crates, some of which came from the Louvre.
Today, Chambord is one of France's most visited monuments, attracting over a million visitors every year.
