Domain note
MAURICE DE SAXE
Maurice de Saxe, Marshal of France, received Chambord from Louis XV in 1745 as a reward for his military exploits. He stayed there "like a sovereign", with his court and regiments, occupying his days with military manoeuvres, hunting and entertainment. He also supervised major works in the castle and its grounds. For example, he built a theatre on the second floor of the keep and updated the parade flat with a rich furniture decor.
The marshal also completed the layout of a French garden and had numerous roads cut through the park to facilitate hunting with hounds. He died in the castle on 30 November 1750.
