Product description

This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Arborescences by Lydie Arickx presented by the Domaine national de Chambord from 30 May to 17 October 2021. It invites you to immerse yourself in a fascinating universe where thought dialogues with nature in a very vital way.

A central figure of French expressionism, heir to Botticelli, Goya and Rodin, Lydie Arickx questions life in all its forms, thus echoing the concerns of those who built Chambord. To do this, she chooses the tree, a moving, almost elusive object, embracing the breath of life and allowing an infinite number of possibilities. The spectator is traversed by a vital energy responsible for the expansion of the universe, the one called "dark energy" in cosmology.

Lydie Arickx has created more than half of the works exhibited especially for Chambord.

Domain note

Lydie Arickx : Arborescences

As if echoing the return to life, Lydie Arickx's exhibition celebrates the power of life.

The visual artist, a major figure of French expressionism, reveals a powerful, free and protean work that questions life in all its forms. Her constant search for new materials and original forms nourishes her work beyond any label, to express fears, swallows, harsh joys or miraculous appearances, sometimes with a moving gentleness.

At Chambord, the trees in the exhibition, 150 works, more than three quarters of which were created for the occasion, meet the real tree of life embodied by the central staircase of the Château - with its double revolution structure reminiscent of DNA - as well as the plant space surrounding the monument.

The works presented also recall the figures of the artist's "great ancestors" (from Botticelli, who reinterprets the famous Spring in public, to Germaine Richier, via Bosch, Rubens, Greco, Goya, Courbet, Ensor and Rebeyrolle), in a whirlwind of colours, materials and formats that are truly astonishing.

Since 30 May, Chambord has been hosting an extraordinary exhibition on the second floor and in the chapel of the château. The works of Lydie Arickx are displayed over more than 1000 m2: whether she uses canvas, concrete, earth, metal, fabric, 3D prints, concrete or ash, the artist transmits an unparalleled energy that makes her one of the most inventive and engaging visual artists.

After her projects at the Cordeliers convent, the La Piscine museum, the Conciergerie and Biron, she is offering a sensual exhibition at Chambord for four months, highlighting the porosity between minerals, plants and animals.
