Domain note
THE CHAMBORD ESTATE
With a surface area of 5,440 hectares, the Domaine national de Chambord is the largest walled park in Europe. It is home to exceptional flora and fauna. The construction of the Chambord castle began in 1519.
At the same time, François I acquired the farmland adjacent to the Boulogne forest to the north of the Cosson, to create the park. More than 2,500 hectares of farmland were annexed. This area consisted mainly of cultivated land, a few groves, and, presumably, moors that fed the sheep of the surrounding farmers.
In 1645, Gaston d'Orléans increased the surface area of the estate and completed the construction of its surrounding wall. The surface area of the National Estate of Chambord then reached its current size. The park of Chambord is part of the Natura 2000 network, whose main objective is the preservation of biodiversity.
